SETTING UP THE MAYPOLE

May is associated with love and new beginnings, and the birth of a new life. It has been a Slovak custom since the Middle Ages that boy who liked a girl put up a tree decorated with colorful ribbons and pieces of paper in front of the house of their chosen one – the Maypole.

It wasn't always just about love and showing affection. People also put Maypoles in front of their houses as a protection against evil spirits and diseases.

Setting up a decorated birch tree on the Main Square in Moldava nad Bodvou, which was organized by the Municipal Cultural Center, was accompanied by the Čučoriedka and Modranka folklore ensembles performances under the Multifunctional Center for Children and Youth.

We thank the leaders Eva Tothová and Veronika Ločová, and the teachers who helped them.

With the symbolic Maypole, spring won over winter in our city, and we are already looking forward to the warm rays of the May sun.
