International mother language day

The mother tongue is unique in that it gives each person a unique perspective from birth that provides individual perception of things. All steps to promote the spread of the mother tongue serve not only to promote linguistic diversity and multilingual education, but also to develop a fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions around the world.

Every year, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) calls on all its member states to organize educational and cultural events to promote linguistic diversity on the occasion of the "International Mother Language Day". The impulse for declaring the day was to preserve the memory of the heroism of Bengali students who demonstrated in Dhaka on February 21st 1952, in recognition of their mother tongue, Bengali, as the second official language in the country which back then was under the Dominion of Pakistan. They were shot by the police during the demonstration.

On this occasion, on February 18th, 2022, we organized an educational and entertaining event for students of the Moldovan schools: Primary school ČSA, Primary school Severná, Primary school with VJM Szepsi Alapiskola, Boldog Salkaházi Sára Egyházi Iskolaközpont and the partner school from Medzev. Students introduced their mother tongue through objects close to their hearts, performed fun, creative, quiz and educational activities, and last but not least, our artists represented their mother tongue through means of fine arts. They cooperated with each other in the activities, so they had the opportunity to look deeper into Slovak, Hungarian, German or Romani. The end of the event was enriched by the communication and entertainment activities of BAFF SA o.z. All participants were awarded with diplomas and prizes. We would also like to thank the City Sports Club for their cooperation and the provision of the K5 hall.
